We would like to extend a very warm welcome to all expatriate families searching for the right school for their child in Shanghai. Britannica is a truly British International school, delivering the very best of British education to a diverse international school population. The school is known for its World Languages Programme that provides additional native language teaching to our European families as well as to our Chinese, Japanese and Korean students. Being a relatively small school for Shanghai, our new pupils settle quickly and there is inclusivity in the events and activities that take place. Our encouragement of high academic and social standards, courtesy, team-work and self-responsibility go a long way to developing our young leaders of tomorrow as effective global citizens.

School description

Britannica International School remains the only British owned, British managed and British staffed school in Shanghai. Recognised for the quality of its provision it is staffed by a strong team of British qualified teachers. Extremely well resourced the needs of each individual child are met through our personalised teaching programmes and small classes.

The English National Curriculum lies at the core of our educational programme, with the high academic standards that it represents and the quality of its world recognised externally accredited examinations. Children from 2-5 years old follow the UK Early Years Foundation Stage Framework before joining Key Stage 1 of the English National Curriculum in the year after they reach 5 years old. Secondary pupils work towards a broad range of IGCSE examinations, which are sat at the age of 16 which then allow them to graduate into the Sixth Form where Britannica is the only British School in the city offering A levels to secure university entrance worldwide post 18 years old.

The broader curriculum reflects the best provision in a UK independent school, with plenty of opportunities to develop in the sports, arts and music. After-school activities take place four days a week and are mostly free. The school encourages a sense of formality while not neglecting the fact that children need time to be creative, explore their own interests, play with friends, make and learn from mistakes and understand their role as a team player as well as a team leader.
