Y7 Memory Box project

In history, our Year 7 pupils are studying sources of information and last week gave their tutors and classmates an insight into their lives as they gave their memory box presentations. They had collected together a selection of objects and mementos that best represented who they are and put them in a memory box, colorfully decorated with photos. They spoke eloquently about their history and shared stories about themselves and their family.

The Danish National Performance Team put on an absolutely mesmerising show last night with 28 outstanding artists with a mix of gymnastics and dance. The audience were on their feet at the end and the standing ovation was truly deserved. Y3 amateur geologists learned about soil

In Science this week our Year 3 amateur geologists had a fantastic time demonstrating their learning about the different layers of soil when creating soil profiles from edible treats. The children had to look at the available chocolatey ingredients and decide which would best represent the bed rock, rocky soil sub soil and top soil layers, before assembling their yummy soil profiles!

Debating Reality TV and Super Heroes

Today the first House debate competition of the 2018-19 season took place with the 6th Form leading the way. North took on South in a debate over whether or not Reality TV should be banned, whilst East faced West in a debate about whether the impact of the recent spate of Super Hero movies is a good thing. West currently hold the debating crown at this level and the other Houses did their best to dethrone them. The winners will be announced at the next Senior School assembly.

At the weekend, around 20 Year 11 and 12 DT students had a tour of the workshop facilities and saw demonstrations of welding, milling machines, lathes, powder coating and sandblasting during a trip organised by our DT department in conjunction with Techshop, a vibrant, creative community that provides access to tools, software and space. It was a great experience and invaluable to our students as they work towards their GCSE.

The FS1 children have been working very hard this weekend with their parents to find the best way to protect their eggs and help them survive the Great Humpty Egg Drop. This annual event starts with circle time and the children get to showcase their wonderful creations to their classmates and predict whether they will survive the fall. They then head to the playground to test their predictions. As always there are a few cracks but lots of smiles.

The Year 5s have been exploring the three different eras of The Stone Age and used their skills in transferring information onto a "stone wall canvas". With limited resources, they created incredible stories just as the people from that time period would have done. A group of Year 8s are having an amazing time on their end of Prep School trip to Sri Lanka. Experiences so far have included some very close encounters with the elephants at the Elephant Freedom Project where they also prepared rice balls from scratch to feed to the elephants. They finished with an informative visit to the dung factory to learn about the amazing process of turning elephant dung to notebooks and ornaments.

This term, all of year 5 native and non-native pupils, participated in a treasure hunt in which they had to remember words and phrases learnt in Arabic. For the senior school debating competition, we examined “The point of education”, with West House taking on East to debate the motion that “A degree in the Sciences is more valuable than a degree in the Arts”, whilst North tackled South on the motion that “Teaching knowledge is more important than teaching skills”. With many of the debaters having had experience of the World Scholars Cup and others having put their skills to the test in their Humanities and English lessons, the quality was high.

After a stellar display of skills the girls were crowned unbeaten champions whilst the boys reached the final and were a close second. Today saw the first Pre-Prep musical showcases with FS1 and Year 1 taking the stage. The children performed with confidence and energy and it looked as if they were thoroughly enjoying themselves. To think that some of them are only three years old really is quite unbelievable. They looked so smart in their colour co-ordinated t-shirts provided by the Pre-Prep parents and every class sang their own song as well as a welcome and goodbye song.

What I love about sport is that it sometimes throws you a massive curve ball; sometimes the minnows beat the giants or whatever you do, things just seem to not work out. We had one of those days! Having won our group, beating Repton, The Pearl and Raha, we went through to the semi-final against a strong team from West Yas. The boys played brilliantly and 8 minutes later we were in the final against The Pearl (who had qualified as the strongest losers).

The Year 3 Native Arabic Speakers have been working very hard on the story ‘Aliens Love Molokhia’ in which the aliens steal all the Molokhia (a traditional dish from the Middle East) and the humans have to work out how to get it all back. The children then had great fun acting out the play.

This afternoon saw Miss Costello and Miss Lewis host the Year 5 and 6 ASA Bake Off. The children cooked up a storm! From chocolate buttercream icing to multi-coloured fondant and from sprinkles in the sponge to different daisy decorations, all of the children did a fantastic job and whipped up creative masterpieces. Winners of this year’s UAE Teen Sports & Fitness Awards were announced at a gala event this weekend in Dubai. The FS1 Corridor was a rainbow of colour this morning as the children excitedly arrived in their brightly coloured clothes. There was a parade to show of their beautifully decorated elephant masks and in the classroom they enjoyed ‘show and tell’ where they used fantastic descriptive words to explain how they made their ‘Elmers’ from recycled products at home. Y3 Pupils fist official visit to science lab

This term the topic in Year 3 is the rainforest and as an introduction the pupils enjoyed their first official visit to the science labs where they had the opportunity to study different plant cells under a microscope. The lesson started with a talk on the importance of safety in the science labs and they then studied different plant cells and sketched and made notes on what they observed. It is very exciting to think that there may be future scientists amongst them.

Fifteen pupils completed the Adventurous Journey section of the International Award yesterday by presenting their aims, experiences and the skills learnt from their weekend in Fujairah to the award assessors, Cranleigh international award team, parents and peers. What a fantastic Pirates celebration FS2 pupils had this week!

The day started with a visit from Pirate Pete, who had prepared a video for the children to watch at the start of the topic. To have him visit in person was so exciting and provided an opportunity to find out why pirates never brushed their teeth and why they ate maggoty biscuits. They also discovered that whilst he was a ‘real’ pirate and didn’t want to share his treasure with any of the children, he was actually quite friendly and was pushed to steal only because he needed to feed his family.

Term 2 in the Prep School had a strong focus on character development, with the children learning about the virtues and values they need to flourish in school and life. It was logical therefore that the pupils selected to attend our Breakfast with the Stars in this last week of the term were those who have been amazing role models, actively demonstrating the virtues and the strengths that we work to instil and embed in all our young Cranleighans. Our Year 6 pupils have been studying Ancient Islam and the Golden Era of Baghdad. Part of this study included researching the Crossings of the Empty Quarter. Walter Thesiger, a world famous explorer and accomplished photographer was one of these pioneers. The Year 6s used chalk and charcoal to replicate some of his black and white photos. Year 6 parents will be able to see some of them at the Grand Souk tomorrow.

The pupils made Tortilla de patata - diced potatoes fried in olive oil then made into a thick omelette which were then put into a lightly toasted ‘barra de pan’ (baguette) to make ‘bocadillos de tortilla’. In conjunction with the Ministry of Tolerance and ADEK, a group of pupils from China visited Cranleigh today. The award winning students treated Years 3 and 4 pupils to traditional Chinese performances including singing, dancing and instrumental acts. They then joined us to celebrate International Day on the school field and showcased some of their arts and craft skills. As part of their PE curriculum, pupils enjoy Outdoor Adventurous Activities. This morning, Year 8s were instructed to appoint a team leader to act as the shepherd who was then tasked with leading the ‘sheep’ into a pen without speaking. Students focused on developing their non-verbal communication, problem solving and team work skills by coming up with commands to navigate their way around an obstacle course.

This first week of the Spring Term has opened with inter-House Cross Country competitions for pupils in Years 3 to 11. Pupils run for between 25 and 35 minutes during their Games lessons to complete as many laps of the one-kilometre loop around the school as they can. The winning House will be announced next week. We had a very special visit from the Fatima Bint Mohamed Bin Zayed Initiative (FBMI) today. We were delighted to be able to welcome Special Olympic athletes, Michelle Kwan and Matthew Williams to Cranleigh yesterday. Abu Dhabi has been selected to host the Special Olympics in 2019 and Michelle and Matthew were able to tell us a little more about it. They told us of their background, about competing at the Games, about their feelings and emotions as well as valuable tales of failure and perseverance. Cranleigh pupils asked lots of questions which the athletes answered with real passion.
